Hunter Education Program Information:

Pre-registration is now required. Read carefully!

If you are not pre-registered, you will be turned away at the door. No money is needed at the time of registration. The fee will be collected the day of the class. Please pre-register for the upcoming class (the next one only - no skips!) by coming to the Main Range Office or by calling the office at 510-569-0213 during normal business hours. If you show up without pre-registering, you will be turned away: no walk-ins will be accepted. If you are late, the day of the class, you will also be turned away. If you have never been to Chabot Gun Club before, it would be advisable that you visit before the day of the class so that you are familiar with the route and the time it takes to get here.

When - 2nd Saturday Every Month:    6 AM to 7:30 PM. Gates open at 5:30 AM. Currently, only 25 arrivals will be able to take the class until we get some more instructors - pre-registration is required.

Retesting - If you need to retake the test, the instructor will be available, by appointment, to administer a retest on the Sunday after the second Saturday.

Where - Cleckner Building next to trap
How Much - $15.00
Activity Manager - Tim Morrison

This is a one day course.  We can accommodate the first 25, pre-registered students only.  We open the gates at 5:30 AM.  The course is from 6:00 AM to 7:30 PM.  Please bring a jacket, drinks and lunch.  This is a rustic location so dress appropriately for the weather.  We do not have live fire so there is no need to bring firearms to the course.

A 100 question test is administered at the end of class, and certificates are given out upon successful completion. There are a couple of short breaks during the day and a lunch break of 45 minutes. Bring your own food and supplement from the snack bar.

This is a marathon class, and while we are not legally able to dissuade younger people, we do need to point out to parents that it is VERY HARD for many juveniles to maintain the level of attention required to pass the test after a 14 hour period. Typically, 10% of the students fail to pass the first time. This, however, is not necessarily a problem, since there is only a one-time fee and a student can come back and retake the test the following or subsequent months.

If, for some reason, you are turned away from the course, please go to http://www.dfg.ca.gov/huntered/classes.aspx and the courses are listed by county.

We always recommend to study before you take a Hunter Education Course.  There are a couple ways this can be done.  First option, you can get the Hunter Education manual in advance and complete the chapter reviews at the end of the book.  Second option, you can get the Hunter Education manual, workbook, and complete the questions in the workbook.  If you want to go with option one or two, you must contact the Hunter Education Instructor you are taking course from or go to your local DFG Office.  Third option is you can go to any of the DFG approved Home Study/ On-line Courses; study the material on web sites.  The web sites are http://www.hunter-ed.com/ca/ or http://www.huntercourse.com/usa/california/ or http://www.ihea.com/hunter-education/online-courses.php

We recommend the web sites for a couple reasons.  First the Today's Hunter in California (http://www.hunter-ed.com/ca/) web site is the same company that makes the Hunter Education manuals we use in California so the material is very similar.  This site has California specific information and good animations.  Secondly the HunterCourse.com (http://www.huntercourse.com/usa/california/) is a great web site.  This web site has great animations, California specific information and will narrate to the student if they wish.

On a side note, these web sites do not charge you for using them unless you want to print out a voucher.  So don't get scared away when it looks like a pay web site.  We recommend using these web sites for studying.  You do not need a voucher for a traditional Hunter Education Course.

We appreciate you taking the time to study prior to taking a Hunter Education Course. Classes can be found at http://www.dfg.ca.gov/huntered/classes.aspx.

If you would like to become a hunter education instructor please contact Lt James Kasper at jkasper@dfg.ca.gov.
